Kolkata metro to be extended till Hooghly's Chuchura? Here's what Railway minister says
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government has approved the Mahila Samman Yojana, a welfare scheme aimed at providing ₹2100 monthly aid to eligible women in the national capital. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the cabinet’s decision on Thursday, highlighting the government's continued commitment to empowering women.
This development comes as the city braces for assembly elections, expected in February 2024. The Election Commission is yet to announce the official dates, but AAP is gearing up to defend its stronghold after commanding victories in 2015 and 2020, where it won 67 and 63 seats respectively in the 70-member assembly.
The scheme, previously mentioned in the 2024-25 budget as 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,' earmarks ₹2100 crore to facilitate the financial assistance. The objective is to alleviate economic challenges faced by women in Delhi, ensuring dignity and support to those eligible under its criteria.
Despite its promise, the scheme faced delays due to bureaucratic hurdles. Reports suggest that the Finance Department raised concerns over budgetary constraints, putting the plan under scrutiny before the final nod from the cabinet.
Arvind Kejriwal, addressing reporters, emphasized the importance of the scheme in uplifting women. “This initiative reflects our commitment to women's empowerment. We are not just making announcements but ensuring tangible support,” he said.
